there are many things i could say about tumblr staff posting about wanting to force more algorithms on people because it makes the site “easier to use”, from “actually it makes it much harder to use because suddenly the things that appear on my dashboard aren’t predictable and i can’t as easily filter for the specific content i want to see by only following specific people” to “i do not want social media to be easy and frictionless, i want to actually talk to and engage with real human people and turning that into a simple and straightforward content slurry removes the actually interesting and compelling thing about being on a social media”
but also, y'know what would make the site much easier to use? fixing the outstanding bug that i submitted like a year ago that makes it so that there’s just a very high but also completely random chance that sharing posts with people doesn’t work. y'know, sharing posts, that feature that ought to be very good for a social media because it fosters connection between people while also promoting content? that just has a 99% chance to brick if you have an open conversation with someone on the mobile app? that feels like something that ought to have been a bit more of a priority than “adding more algorithms”,
